LaShawn Lee, the three-month-old Richton Park baby allegedly beaten by his teenage father, died Friday after clinging to life for nearly a week.

Charges against the father, Kirby Griffin of 22606 Latonia Lane, are expected to be upgraded from attempted murder to murder after an autopsy Saturday, police said. Griffin, 17, is being held in Cook County Jail on $1 million bond.
LaShawn is the 38th child under the age of 15 to be killed in the Chicago area this year.
'It was amazing that the child hung on this long,' Richton Park police Detective Carl Moorman said.
LaShawn had been on a ventilator since last Saturday morning, when paramedics responded to a report of a baby not breathing. Paramedics arrived to find Griffin at the door of his mother's home, where he lives, holding the child.
'We were met at the door with a pulseless and lifeless baby,' said Michael Spain, chief of paramedics at the Richton Park Fire Department. 'He was cold to the touch.'
The child, weighing just under 10 pounds, appeared bruised and beaten, Spain said. 'I couldn't open his right eye, it was so swollen,' he said.
Paramedics revived the child after eight minutes and got him to the emergency room of Olympia Fields Osteopathic Medical Center in five minutes, Spain said.
From there, LaShawn was flown by helicopter to Wyler Children's Hospital at the University of Chicago. Doctors there say they discovered broken bones and severe brain injuries caused by blows to the head.
In addition, X-rays revealed at least five broken bones and a broken right leg from previous incidents of apparent abuse, according to Dr. Aaron Zucker, director of pediatric critical care.
The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services already had been investigating two complaints concerning Griffin, dating back to July 4.
The first complaint involved a broken leg, sources said, while the second came from a cable-TV repairman alarmed by conditions inside the home.
DCFS officials would not discuss the complaints. The agency will review how it handled the case, as it does in any instance when a child in its purview dies.
Police said they had no contact with DCFS regarding the family.

Griffin also has pending criminal cases in Cook County Circuit Court, including battery and assault charges. He also had a juvenile record, police said.
On May 4, Griffin was accused of pushing a customer and ripping a phone from the wall of a laundromat. He was charged with battery, assault and criminal damage to property.

On June 23, he was accused of ripping a necklace off of a Richton Park woman. He was charged with robbery and released on $100,000 bond.
Moorman said he knew about LaShawn but never had seen him.
'We knew that (Griffin) was the father of a child. I did not know he had custody of the child,' Moorman said.

LaShawn's mother is an unidentified 14-year-old. he was born April 28 at Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey. He was pronounced dead at 11:15 a.m. Friday.
