Worth The Drive: The Port ExploreumOne interactive station that you don’t want to miss is the Lake Michigan table. Located on the first floor of the Port Exploreum, the Lake Michigan Table instantly catches the visitor’s eyes. Various aspects of the day’s weather are displayed—wind direction, cloud cover, air temperature and wave height on all parts of Lake Michigan. During the winter, discover where the Lake has frozen over. Touch the table to learn what ships are out on the Lake, their speed and direction. You can also track the SS Badger and the Lake Express as they make their daily trips across from Wisconsin to Michigan. Delve into information about key areas around the Lake including lake depths, shipwrecks, conditions of the area, and points of interest. A mix of written word, pictures and videos helps you discover why Lake Michigan is such a marvel.
Another exhibit you don’t want to miss is the “Murmurs from the Deep”. The sound of water rushing in and hulls groaning as they sink into the abyss. Headlines and stories memorializing lost ships and lost lives. Photographs of shipwrecks in their final resting place on the bottom of Lake Michigan. These are the sights and sounds of “Murmurs from the Deep” the current exhibit at the Port Exploreum.
The exhibit is a look at almost all the known shipwrecks in Ozaukee County waters from the oldest – the Niagra, which sank in 1856 - to the newest – the Linda E. last commercial fishing tug based in Port Washington, which was run over and sank while fishing in December 1998. Also featured in the 2nd floor East Gallery is the story of Port Washington’s Unsung Hero, USCG Captain Roger Erdmann.”
The Port Exploreum is a fun and unique experience that is fun for the whole family! Whether it's your first time in Port Washington or you have lived in Port your whole life there is something for you! This is an experience you can't find anywhere else and is differently Worth The Drive!
